What is Satellite AIS?

Automatic Identification System (AIS) is a shipboard broadcast system that transmits a vessel's identification and position to aid navigation and improve maritime safety. Current terrestrial based AIS systems provide only limited shore-based coverage and are not able to provide global open ocean coverage. Using ORBCOM M's satellite system, customers will have access to AIS data well beyond coastal regions in a cost effective and timely fashion.

In 2008, ORBCOMM launched new low-earth orbit (LEO) satellites, equipped with the capability to collect AIS data. Additionally, ORBCOMM has incorporated the ability to receive, collect and forward AIS data in the design of the next 18 ORBCOMM Generation 2 (0G2) satellites under development. As additional satellites are launched, ORBCOMM will increase it's capability by providing greater redundancy and more frequent updates of AIS data.

Annual subscription service agreements and user applications for global, regional and filtered satellite AIS data are available to both qualified government and commercial customers. Simply contact ORBCOMM to gain access to global AIS vessel data.

ORBCOMM is the first and only commercial satellite network with AIS Data Service.
